Here’s how I make money online: I’ve made $11,900.37 online from nine platforms, mostly by training AI and taking paid research studies in my free time. Every number in this post comes from my own account, with screenshots.

None of this is a get-rich-quick plan. Some platforms paid me thousands, some paid me a few dollars at a time, and some stopped paying the way they used to. Here’s exactly what each one paid me, how it works, and where I’d start if I were you.

AI Training Platforms
AI training platforms pay you to review and improve AI responses. They paid me the most by far, but the work comes in projects, so how much you can earn depends on what projects are available.
Outlier AI: $5,977.28
Outlier is where I’ve made the most money online. I worked there from December 2024 to November 2025, about 201 hours in total, which works out to roughly $29.74 an hour.

Most of my work was side-by-side comparisons: reading two AI responses and judging which one is better. I reached “Oracle” status, which gave me priority support and access to more projects. I got paid every week by direct deposit.

Handshake AI: $3,905.81
I made $3,905.81 on Handshake AI in about 9 weeks, from January to March 2026. My project paid $17 an hour, and I was paid weekly by direct deposit.

My dashboard shows $4,055.81, but $150 of that was a bonus paid to me by mistake, which I had to pay back. So I actually kept $3,905.81.
I got in by verifying with my university login, so Handshake AI is a great fit for students and recent graduates. I stopped because my project kept adding daily unpaid assessments, and since I treated it as casual side income, it stopped being worth it for me. But new projects are still available to me, like this one paying $30 an hour, so I can go back whenever I want.

Paid Study Platforms
Paid study platforms pay you to take part in research, mostly short surveys from universities and companies. The pay is lower than AI training, but there’s something to do almost every day, and you can do it in spare minutes.
Prolific: $809.70
I’ve been on Prolific since January 2023, with 513 paid studies so far. I average about $12 an hour, or about $1.50 per study.

Most of my Prolific pay comes in British pounds, which works out to $809.70 total at today’s exchange rate. I cash out to PayPal, and the money arrives in under a minute.
The catch is competition. Good studies fill up within a minute, so the people who check often get the most.

CloudResearch Connect: $177.12
I started taking studies on CloudResearch Connect in September 2025. I have 214 approved studies and zero rejections.

Pay is around $10 an hour or below, but the studies are short, new ones show up daily, and they don’t fill up in seconds. If you’re screened out partway through, you still get paid for your time. I cash out to PayPal which has a $5 minimum.
Connect has a waitlist now, so if you’re interested, sign up early. It pairs perfectly with Prolific: when one runs dry, I switch to the other.

Receipt Apps
Amazon Shopper Panel: $188.70
Amazon Shopper Panel pays you for uploading photos of your receipts from stores other than Amazon. I’ve made $188.70 since December 2021.

Every receipt used to pay $1. Now it depends on the store: $0.70 for clothing, home improvement, sporting goods and department stores, $0.10 for groceries, and $0 for gas stations and restaurants. Most of my receipts were groceries, so I stopped.
It’s invite-only now, but it’s still worth it if you shop in stores that pay $0.70.

How I Save Money
These don’t count toward my $11,058.61, because cash back is money saved, not money earned. But they put real money back in my pocket on things I’d buy anyway.
- Upside: I’ve gotten $121.56 in cash back so far, mostly on gas. Read my Upside review.
- PayPal Debit Card: gives me 5% cash back on gas, on top of Upside. Read my PayPal Debit Card review.
- PayPal Cashback World Mastercard: gives me 3% cash back when I check out with PayPal online. Read my PayPal Cashback World Mastercard review.
- Wells Fargo Active Cash: gives me 2% cash back on everything else, including Amazon. Read my Wells Fargo Active Cash review.

Where Should You Start?
It depends on your situation:
- You’re a student or recent graduate: start with Handshake AI. It paid me $3,900+ in 9 weeks, and I’m seeing projects that pay up to $30 an hour.
- You have a few hours a week and want the highest pay: try Outlier AI.
- You want flexible side money in your spare minutes: join Prolific and CloudResearch Connect, and use both.
- You shop in stores a lot: get on the Amazon Shopper Panel waitlist.
- You drive a lot: use Upside with a 5% cash back card.
What I’ve Learned
Don’t rely on one platform. Amazon Shopper Panel cut its rates, and Prolific studies can fill up in seconds, so I added CloudResearch Connect to always have something to do. Being on more than one platform is what kept me earning.
Quality matters more than speed. I pass every attention check and always write my own answers, never with AI. That’s why I have one rejection on Prolific and zero on Connect, and it’s why I keep getting studies.
It’s side money, not a paycheck. AI training came the closest to a real income. Paid studies add up slowly, a few dollars at a time.
My Verdict: Can You Really Make Money Online?
Yes. I’ve made $11,900.37 from nine legit platforms, and every one of them paid me. Just go in with the right expectations: AI training pays the most, while paid studies pay less but are flexible and there’s something to do almost every day.
If you’re just starting, pick one or two platforms from the “Where should you start?” list above, and read my full review before you sign up. For a student, that’s Handshake AI. For anyone with spare minutes, it’s Prolific, UserCrowd and CloudResearch Connect.
Once the money starts coming in, I put it to work. If you’re ready to start investing too, see how to open your first brokerage account, and use my saving vs investing calculator to see how much it could grow.
