Do you have to pay taxes on Crowdtap? Crowdtap pays you in gift cards, not cash, but gift cards count as income to the IRS. This Crowdtap tax calculator shows whether you owe tax on your Crowdtap gift cards in 2026 and how much they add to your tax bill.
I redeemed 71 Crowdtap gift cards, $355 in total, from November 2021 to July 2023. Here’s how much you can make on Crowdtap, month by month.

How your taxable income is worked out
How this is calculated
- Crowdtap gift cards are rewards for sharing your opinions in polls and surveys, not pay for running a business. So they’re “other income” on Schedule 1, line 8z, at the face value of each gift card: added to your income, with no self-employment tax.
- Other gig income = other gig income − gig expenses. That’s self-employment income, reported on Schedule C.
- Self-employment tax only applies to your other gig income: 15.3% (12.4% Social Security and 2.9% Medicare) on 92.35% of your gig profit. You only owe it when that comes to $400 or more, which means about $433 of profit. Social Security tax stops at $184,500 of combined W-2 pay and gig earnings. Half of it is deductible.
- Federal income tax uses the 2026 brackets and standard deduction ($16,100 single, $32,200 married filing jointly, $24,150 head of household). Crowdtap gift cards don’t get the qualified business income deduction, since they aren’t business income. Other gig income does: 20% of your gig profit after the self-employment tax deduction.
- Child tax credit is $2,200 per child under 17. Up to $1,700 per child can come back as a refund, based on 15% of your earned income over $2,500.
- State income tax uses 2026 rates, brackets, standard deductions and exemptions from the Tax Foundation, updated for the 2026 cuts in Arkansas, Georgia, South Carolina, Utah and West Virginia. A few states (like California) hadn’t published 2026 bracket amounts, so their 2025 amounts are used. Head of household uses single brackets.
- Tax on your Crowdtap gift cards = your total tax minus what your total tax would be without them. That’s the extra tax Crowdtap adds.
- 1099 forms: a company only has to send a 1099-MISC once it pays you $2,000 or more in 2026 (it was $600 through 2025). That’s 400 Crowdtap gift cards at $5, so you won’t get one. You still report your gift cards, even though they aren’t cash.
- Before deductions leaves out the standard deduction, the qualified business income deduction, and state deductions and exemptions, so you can see how much they save you.
Not included: the earned income tax credit, city and county income taxes (like New York City or Maryland counties), state low-income credits, itemized deductions, and retirement or health insurance deductions. Your real tax can be lower. If someone can claim you as a dependent (like a parent), your standard deduction is smaller.
How to Use the Crowdtap Tax Calculator
- Enter your Crowdtap gift cards for the year. Crowdtap doesn’t have a downloadable history, so count the gift cards on your Reward Status page. 1,000 points = $5. The $250 already filled in is my best year, 2022.
- Add your other income. Enter other gig income, gig expenses and your W-2 pay. Enter 0 for anything you don’t have.
- Pick your filing status, children under 17 and state.
- Read your results. The big number is the extra tax Crowdtap adds to your bill. Under it, you’ll see whether you need to file and whether you’ll get a 1099.
Do You Have to Pay Taxes on Crowdtap?
Your gift cards count as income at face value, so a $5 Amazon gift card is $5 of income. Whether you owe anything depends on your other income.
Crowdtap pays you for your opinions, not for running a business, so the calculator treats your gift cards as “other income” on Schedule 1, line 8z. That means:
- No self-employment tax. You only pay regular income tax.
- Income tax only above your standard deduction. For 2026, the standard deduction is $16,100 for single filers, $32,200 for married couples filing jointly and $24,150 for heads of household.
Here’s what that means:
- Crowdtap is your only income: you owe nothing. Even at my max of $30 a month, that’s $360 a year, nowhere near $16,100.
- You also have a W-2 job: your gift cards are taxed at your tax rate. $360 in gift cards plus a $40,000 W-2 job in California comes to about $58 in federal and California income tax.
Study sites like UserCrowd are different. They pay you as an independent tester, so that’s self-employment income, with its own 15.3% tax. For that, use my UserCrowd tax calculator.
Does Crowdtap Send a 1099?
Don’t expect one. Starting in 2026, a company only has to send a 1099-MISC once it pays you $2,000 or more in a year. It was $600 through 2025. At $5 a gift card, that’s 400 gift cards. Even logging in every day and getting every action I could, my max was $30 a month.
No form doesn’t mean no tax. If you owe, you report your gift cards as other income, 1099 or not.
How Much Should You Set Aside From Crowdtap?
Gift cards aren’t cash, so you can’t set aside part of each one. If you owe, set the tax aside from your paycheck or other income.
- Crowdtap is your only income: nothing.
- You also have a W-2 job: about 10% to 30% of your gift cards, depending on your tax bracket and state. In my California example, it’s 16%.
The calculator works out your own amount.
Do You Pay State Tax on Crowdtap?
In most states, yes, if you have enough total income to owe state tax. Nine states have no income tax on wages: Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington and Wyoming. The calculator uses the Tax Foundation’s 2026 state income tax table.
Crowdtap Tax Calculator FAQ
Are Crowdtap gift cards taxable?
Yes. They count as income at face value. You only owe tax on them if your total income is above the standard deduction.
Do I have to pay taxes on Crowdtap if I don’t have a job?
If Crowdtap is your only income, no. As a single filer, your income would have to be over $16,100 before you owe federal income tax.
Will I get a 1099 from Crowdtap?
Don’t expect one. Crowdtap only has to send a 1099-MISC once it pays you $2,000 or more in a year. That’s 400 gift cards at $5.
Do you pay self-employment tax on Crowdtap?
Usually not. Gift cards for polls and surveys are other income, so they only get regular income tax. If you run survey sites like a business, they’d go on Schedule C instead, with self-employment tax.
Is it safe to enter my income?
Yes. Everything is calculated in your browser. Nothing you type is saved or sent anywhere.
