How your taxable income is worked out

    How this is calculated
    • Shopper Panel rewards are payment for sharing your receipts and answering surveys, not for running a business. So they’re “other income” on Schedule 1, line 8z: added to your income, with no self-employment tax. Offer rewards are counted too, to be safe.
    • Other gig income = other gig income − gig expenses. That’s self-employment income, reported on Schedule C.
    • Self-employment tax only applies to your other gig income: 15.3% (12.4% Social Security and 2.9% Medicare) on 92.35% of your gig profit. You only owe it when that comes to $400 or more, which means about $433 of profit. Social Security tax stops at $184,500 of combined W-2 pay and gig earnings. Half of it is deductible.
    • Federal income tax uses the 2026 brackets and standard deduction ($16,100 single, $32,200 married filing jointly, $24,150 head of household). Shopper Panel rewards don’t get the qualified business income deduction, since they aren’t business income. Other gig income does: 20% of your gig profit after the self-employment tax deduction.
    • Child tax credit is $2,200 per child under 17. Up to $1,700 per child can come back as a refund, based on 15% of your earned income over $2,500.
    • State income tax uses 2026 rates, brackets, standard deductions and exemptions from the Tax Foundation, updated for the 2026 cuts in Arkansas, Georgia, South Carolina, Utah and West Virginia. A few states (like California) hadn’t published 2026 bracket amounts, so their 2025 amounts are used. Head of household uses single brackets.
    • Tax on your Shopper Panel rewards = your total tax minus what your total tax would be without them. That’s the extra tax Shopper Panel adds.
    • 1099 forms: a company only has to send a 1099-MISC once it pays you $2,000 or more in 2026 (it was $600 through 2025). With the $10 monthly cap, Shopper Panel never gets close. You still report your rewards, even though they’re paid to your Amazon balance.
    • Before deductions leaves out the standard deduction, the qualified business income deduction, and state deductions and exemptions, so you can see how much they save you.

Not included: the earned income tax credit, city and county income taxes (like New York City or Maryland counties), state low-income credits, itemized deductions, and retirement or health insurance deductions. Your real tax can be lower.

How to Use the Amazon Shopper Panel Tax Calculator

    1. Enter your Shopper Panel rewards for the year. Add receipts, surveys and offers. Your total is in the app’s Rewards tab.
    2. Add your other income. Other gig income, gig expenses and W-2 pay. Enter 0 for anything you don’t have.
    3. Pick your filing status, children under 17 and state.
    4. Read your results. The big number is the extra tax your rewards add, with the percentage to set aside under it.

    How the Calculator Works

It figures your total 2026 tax twice, once with your Shopper Panel rewards and once without, and shows you the difference.

It treats your rewards as other income, so they get federal and state income tax but no self-employment tax. Other gig income you enter is treated as self-employment income, with self-employment tax and the qualified business income deduction. It covers the 2026 federal brackets and standard deduction, the child tax credit and state income tax for all 50 states and DC.

It leaves out the earned income tax credit, city and county taxes, itemized deductions and retirement deductions. Open “How this is calculated” under the calculator for the details.

    Example Results

    SituationTax on Shopper Panel
    $120, no other income$0
    $60 + a $40,000 W-2 job, California$10
    $120 + a $25,000 W-2 job, Texas$12
    $250 + a $60,000 W-2 job, married filing jointly, New York$44
    $120 + an $80,000 W-2 job, California$38

The bigger your job’s paycheck, the higher the rate on your rewards. With a $25,000 job in Texas, it’s 10%. With an $80,000 job in California, it’s 32%, because the rewards land in the 22% federal bracket plus California’s 9.3% rate.

What to Do With Your Result

    • Set aside that percentage from your monthly rewards, or just plan for it at tax time since the amounts are small.
    • Keep a record of your rewards from the Rewards tab each year.
