Yes, you owe Outlier AI taxes once you earn enough. Outlier pays you as an independent contractor, so no taxes are taken out, and once your profit is about $433, you owe self-employment tax on it. Outlier sent me a 1099 for my work there, so expect one if you earn enough.
I made $5,977.28 on Outlier from December 2024 to November 2025. That’s about $29.74 an hour over 201 hours, paid weekly by direct deposit. Here’s how Outlier taxes work, and what that $5,977 comes to.

Do You Have to Pay Taxes on Outlier AI?
Yes, once you earn enough. Outlier work is contract work, so your pay is self-employment income, and nothing is taken out of your weekly payouts.
That brings two taxes:
- Self-employment tax: 15.3% (12.4% Social Security and 2.9% Medicare). You owe it when your net earnings from self-employment are $400 or more, which is about $433 of profit.
- Income tax: Only on income above your standard deduction: $16,100 if you’re single in 2026, $32,200 for married couples filing jointly and $24,150 for heads of household.
At Outlier’s pay, $433 doesn’t take long. At my rate, it was about 15 hours of work.
- Outlier is your only income: a little over 14% of your profit goes to self-employment tax, plus income tax once you’re past the standard deduction.
- You also have a job: your Outlier pay gets income tax at your tax rate, on top of self-employment tax.
Does Outlier Send a 1099?
Yes, if you earn enough. Outlier sent me a 1099 for my contract pay. US companies report contractor pay on Form 1099-NEC. For payments made in 2026, they only have to send one once they pay you $2,000 or more in a year. Before 2026, it was $600.
How you’re paid matters. Outlier can pay through PayPal, Airtm or direct deposit, and I got direct deposit. If you’re paid through PayPal, those payouts can count toward PayPal’s Form 1099-K instead. PayPal only sends that above $20,000 and 200 payments a year, or less in a few states.
Either way, you report all your gig income, 1099 or not. When your 1099 arrives, check it against your own records.
Outlier AI Taxes: How to Report Your Earnings
- Add up your year. Your weekly payouts are on Outlier’s earnings page. Compare your total with your 1099.
- Report it on Schedule C as self-employment income. Business expenses, like the work share of your internet, lower your profit.
- Figure self-employment tax on Schedule SE, and deduct half of it.
I file with TaxAct. You enter your 1099 and any other self-employment income, and it fills in Schedule C and Schedule SE for you.
How Much Tax Will You Owe on Outlier AI?
Here’s my own $5,977.28, as if it all came in one year. The Outlier AI tax calculator shows:
- No other income: about $845, all self-employment tax. Income tax would be $0, since $5,977 is under the standard deduction.
- With a $40,000 W-2 job in California: about $1,600. That’s $533 federal income tax, $845 self-employment tax and $222 California tax.
That second case is over $1,000 in federal tax, which brings up quarterly payments.
Do You Need to Make Quarterly Tax Payments on Outlier?
Maybe. The IRS expects estimated tax payments if you’ll owe $1,000 or more when you file. For 2026, they’re due April 15, June 15 and Sept. 15, 2026, and Jan. 15, 2027.
- Outlier is your only income: self-employment tax alone reaches $1,000 at about $7,100 of profit.
- You have a W-2 job: you get there with less, but you can ask your employer to withhold more on a new W-4 instead of paying quarterly.
The calculator flags it when the federal tax on your gig income is $1,000 or more.
My Verdict: Do You Owe Taxes on Outlier AI?
Most people who stick with Outlier do. The pay gets you past the $433 line fast, nothing is withheld, and Outlier sends a 1099 once you earn enough. Set aside part of every weekly payout, keep your own records, and check whether you need quarterly payments.

FAQ
Does Outlier take out taxes?
No. You’re paid as a contractor, so nothing is withheld from your weekly payouts.
When does Outlier send 1099s?
Companies have to send 1099-NECs to contractors by January 31 of the next year.
What if I didn’t get a 1099 from Outlier?
You still report your Outlier pay. You might not get one if you earned under $2,000 in 2026, or if you were paid through PayPal.
Can I deduct expenses from my Outlier income?
Yes, if they’re for your Outlier work, like the work share of your internet or computer. They lower your profit on Schedule C.

In most states, yes. Nine states have no income tax on wages: Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington and Wyoming.
