Is Outlier AI Legit? I Made $5,500+ Training AI (Honest Review)

Is Outlier AI legit? Yes. I earned $5,977.28 on Outlier over 201 hours. That works out to about $29.74 an hour, which is one of the best-paying online side income I’ve found so far.

In this review, I’ll cover what the work is actually like, how much you can make, how payments work, and the downsides nobody warns you about.

What is Outlier AI?

Outlier is a platform owned by Scale AI where people get paid to help train AI models. AI companies need real people to check their models’ answers, and Outlier connects them with independent contractors who do that work from home. Tasks are organized into projects, and each project has its own instructions, pay rate, and assessment you need to pass before you can start.

How I found Outlier and got started

I found Outlier on the r/beermoney subreddit, the same place I found Prolific. Signing up for the site itself was simple. The actual projects were a different story. Each one had its own assessment, and they were tedious, usually taking about an hour. I only got my first real task after passing one. So expect to put in some unpaid time upfront before you earn anything.

What the work is actually like

Most of my tasks were side-by-side comparisons. You’re given a prompt and two or more AI responses, and your job is to:

  1. Check what each response got right and wrong.
  2. Write feedback explaining your reasoning.
  3. Pick which response is better overall.

It’s not hard, but you have to pay attention and follow each project’s guidelines closely. Quality matters, and sloppy work can get you removed from a project.

How much can you make on Outlier?

My overall average was about $29.74 an hour. Here’s what my earnings looked like:

  • Total earned: $5,977.28
  • Total hours: 201
  • Best week: $759.22 (Oct 28 – Nov 4, 2025)
  • Busiest week: 191 tasks for $738.77 (July 15 – July 22, 2025)

Your earnings depend heavily on how much work is available. Some weeks I made over $700; other weeks there were only a few tasks.

How you get paid

Outlier pays weekly, every Tuesday night Pacific Time. How fast the money reaches you depends on your payout method:

  • Direct Deposit (what I used): 3 to 5 business days
  • PayPal or AirTM: usually by Wednesday night

I only had one payment issue the whole time. It was a single task that wasn’t paid. I raised it with support, they made a manual adjustment, and I got paid for it.

The downsides of Outlier

Outlier pays well, but it has real problems:

  • AI-graded assessments. This was my biggest frustration. Assessments were often graded by AI, and sometimes it graded them wrong and failed people who should have passed. That’s an hour of your time wasted, and manual grading was becoming rarer.
  • Project removals. You can be taken off a project with little warning.
  • Empty queues. Some days there’s simply no work available.
  • Support. Many people complain about slow support.

So, is Outlier AI legit? My verdict

Yes, Outlier AI is legit. I was paid every week, my one payment issue was fixed, and I earned nearly $6,000.

It’s a great fit if you have lots of free time and want to make real money online. It’s not for people with busy schedules, because work comes and goes, and you need to grab it when it’s there.
