PayPal Credit Card Review: 2% Cash Back, and I Used It the Same Day I Was Approved

In this PayPal Credit Card review, I’ll show you a card that pays a flat 2% cash back on everything. PayPal invited me to apply in January 2024, and I didn’t. I finally applied in April 2026, got approved, and used the card the same day, before it even arrived in the mail.

Here’s why I waited, what got me approved, how I use it next to my other cards, and the downsides.

What Is the PayPal Credit Card?

It’s a Mastercard issued by Synchrony Bank. It pays 2% cash back on every purchase, with no categories to track and nothing to activate. The terms show a $0 annual fee. You also need a PayPal account in good standing, and the card has to stay linked to it.

Why I Waited Two Years to Apply

On January 7, 2024, PayPal emailed me an invite to apply.

I didn’t apply. My Discover secured card was only about a year and a half old, so my credit history was short. That April, Wells Fargo denied me for the 2% Active Cash card for exactly that reason. So I waited.

In 2026, my history was old enough, and I got both 2% cards that year.

How I Got Approved in April 2026

Here’s what I had when I applied:

  • A FICO Score 8 of 766, with no missed payments
  • Over 3 years of credit history, which I built with my first credit card
  • One hard inquiry from the application

I applied on April 2, 2026, and PayPal approved me that day.

Using the Card the Same Day

The approval email said I could start using my new credit line online in the PayPal Wallet while I waited for the physical card. So I did.

My first purchase was $154.98 at TaxAct, on April 2. I had already done my taxes and just needed to check out. I paid with this card, because I wanted to try it.

The card shipped five days later and was due in 5 to 7 business days.

I paid off the TaxAct charge in full that same month.

The 6-Month No-Interest Offer (and the Catch)

My approval email said purchases of $149 or more get No Interest if paid in full in 6 months. My TaxAct purchase was over that, but I paid it off in the same month, so I never needed it.

Here’s the catch. It’s deferred interest. If any of that balance is left after 6 months, you owe interest back to the day you bought it, at the purchase APR. That APR was 29.64% in the terms I read. Only use the offer if you know you can pay it off in time.

How I Use It With My Other Cards

No single card is best for everything. Here’s how I split my spending:

Where I spendCard I useCash back
Anywhere with PayPal checkoutPayPal Cashback World Mastercard3%
Amazon.com, and anywhere without PayPal checkoutWells Fargo Active Cash or this card2%
GasPayPal Debit Card5%
Backup onlyDiscover it1%

This card also earns 2% at PayPal checkout, but my World Mastercard earns 3% there, so the World card wins. I mainly use this one on Amazon and anywhere PayPal checkout isn’t available.

I redeem my cash back to my PayPal balance. Then I spend it on gas with my PayPal Debit Card, which gives me another 5% cash back. Want to see how much you could save? Try my gas cash back calculator.

Why keep two 2% cards? Together they give me a bigger total credit limit.

How I Keep Each Card Under 30%

Credit scores look at how much of your limit you use, both in total and on each card. The common rule is to stay under 30%.

My Wells Fargo limit is more than 2.5 times higher than this card’s limit. So when I make a bigger purchase, I put it on the Wells Fargo card. That keeps each card under 30%. Your card usually reports the balance on your statement date, so paying before the statement closes helps too.

How to Apply

  1. Make sure you have a PayPal account in good standing. The card has to stay linked to it.
  2. Check your credit. I had a 766 and over 3 years of history. Build your history first if you’re newer. Here’s how I got my first credit card.
  3. Apply with PayPal. Expect a hard inquiry.
  4. Use it right away. Once you’re approved, the card works in your PayPal Wallet before the physical card arrives.
  5. Choose e-statements. Paper statements cost $1.99 a month.
  6. Pay it off in full, every time.

Downsides

No sign-up bonus. This is the one that bugs me. My Wells Fargo Active Cash gave me a $200 bonus, and this card gave me nothing.

A high interest rate. The purchase APR was 29.64% in the terms I read, and it’s variable. Never carry a balance.

The deferred interest catch. Miss the 6-month deadline and the interest goes back to the purchase date.

A 3% foreign transaction fee. Don’t use it abroad.

It’s tied to PayPal. You need a PayPal account in good standing, and the card has to stay linked to it.

Don’t pay the IRS with it. The terms treat tax payments as cash advances, which cost $10 or 5% of the amount. I only paid TaxAct’s filing fee, not taxes owed.

Other than these downsides I haven’t had any issues with Synchrony.

PayPal Credit Card Review: My Verdict

Overall, my PayPal Credit Card review comes down to this: yes, it’s worth it if you want a flat 2% with nothing to track, especially if you already use PayPal. I used mine the same day I was approved. The downsides are no sign-up bonus and a high APR, and paying in full avoids the APR.

Use it where PayPal checkout isn’t available. Where it is, use the World Mastercard for 3%. And wait until your credit history is a few years old before you apply, like I did.
