Is Handshake AI legit? Yes. I earned $3,900+ on Handshake AI in 9 weeks, from January to March 2026. The project I worked on paid $17 an hour, which works out to over 200 hours of work.

In this review, I’ll cover how I got in, what the work is like, how pay works, the downsides, and how it compares to Outlier.

What is Handshake AI?
Handshake AI is the AI training side of Handshake, the career platform many college students and graduates already use. It pays people to help train AI models by completing tasks like rating, comparing, and describing AI-generated content. Work is organized into projects, and each project has its own pay rate, training, and assessment.
How I got started
Getting in was easy. I logged in with my university credentials, and that verified me. My project had an assessment and some training materials, and I started my first task about 45 minutes after I began.
What the work is like
The tasks were more varied and interesting than I expected:
- AI video comparisons. Two AI-generated videos side by side, where I gave feedback on which one better matched the prompt.
- AI image comparisons. The same idea, but with images.
None of it was technical. You just need to pay attention and follow the instructions.
How much can you make on Handshake AI?
Pay depends on the project. Mine paid $17 an hour. Here’s what my earnings looked like:
- Total earned: $3,905.81 (my dashboard shows $4,055.81, which includes a $150 bonus paid by mistake that I returned)
- Time span: 9 weeks (Jan 19 – Mar 22, 2026)
- Estimated hours: about 230
- Average week: over $400

My earnings grew as I got faster. In my first weeks I made $125 to $265 a week, and from mid-February on, I made over $520 every week.
How you get paid
Handshake AI pays by direct deposit to your bank. There’s no PayPal option. During onboarding, you connect your bank account through Stripe.
Payments are processed every Wednesday for the prior week. Most of my payments arrived on Wednesday, and a few came on Thursday.

I had one payment issue. In the week of March 9–15, I was paid a $150 incentive from a project I never worked on. When I contacted support, they told me I had to return it by wire transfer to Handshake AI’s bank, and the $25 wire fee came out of my own pocket.

The downsides of Handshake AI
These apply to the project I was on. There are many projects, and they vary.
The pay. $17 an hour is on the lower side for AI training work.
Too many assessments. My project added a new gated assessment almost every day before I could start tasks. Each one took 45 minutes to an hour, unpaid.
Payment mistakes cost you. Returning the accidental bonus cost me a $25 wire fee.
Support. Responses I received were slow and generic, and they didn’t feel tailored to my actual problem.
Why I stopped
My project kept adding more assessments every day, and it got tiring. I planned to start another project but never got back to it. The project I was on was easy and interesting, and the others didn’t appeal to me as much. I was treating Handshake AI as casual side income, so I didn’t push it.
New projects are still available to me, though, like this one paying $30 an hour, so I can go back whenever I want.

Handshake AI vs. Outlier
I’ve also worked on Outlier AI, where I made $5,977. Here’s how they compare:
Pay: it depends on the project on both platforms, so there’s no clear winner. My Handshake project paid $17 an hour, and I averaged about $29.74 an hour on Outlier.
Support: Both have issues. Handshake AI’s support was slow and generic in my experience.
Work availability: on both, it depends on your expertise and which projects are open.
Getting in: Both were easy, but Handshake AI was even easier. I just logged in with my university credentials.
So, is Handshake AI legit? My verdict
Yes, Handshake AI is legit. I was paid every week and earned over $3,900 in 9 weeks.
It’s a good fit if you have free time and want to earn something on the side. If you’re looking for full-time income, skip it. Projects end, and the next one can take time to show up, so it can’t replace a full-time job.
If you want to try it, you can sign up for Handshake AI here. Many people also work on a second platform, like Outlier AI, to have more work available when one platform runs dry. If you want a third AI platform here’s my review of Neevo AI.
If you want something more flexible, read my Prolific review, my CloudResearch Connect review, my Crowdtap review and my UserCrowd review. These pay less, but it’s much easier to fit them around a busy day.
