The Wells Fargo Active Cash® Card pays a flat 2% cash back on everything. Wells Fargo denied me the first time I applied. Two years later, they approved me quickly, and I earned a $200 bonus.

Here’s why I was denied, what changed, how I got the bonus, and how I use this card today.

How the Wells Fargo Active Cash Card Works
It’s simple:
- 2% cash back on purchases, with no categories to track and no limit
- $0 annual fee
- 0% intro APR for 12 months from account opening, on purchases and qualifying balance transfers
There’s nothing to activate and nothing to rotate. Every purchase earns 2%.
Why Wells Fargo Denied Me in 2024
I applied for the first time in April 2024 and got denied.

My credit score was already in the mid-to-high 700s, so the score wasn’t the problem. The problem was that I barely had any credit history. My first credit card was a Discover secured card that I got in July 2022, so when I applied, my credit history wasn’t even two years old.
For big banks like Wells Fargo, a short credit history is a red flag, even with a good score. If you’re just starting out, here’s how I got my first credit card with no credit history.
The Invite That Came a Year Later
In late July 2025, right when my credit history turned three years old, Wells Fargo invited me to apply. The offer was a $200 cash rewards bonus for spending $500 in the first 3 months.

I didn’t apply right away, because I had just gotten my second card two months earlier: the PayPal Cashback World Mastercard.
How I Got Approved in 2026
By March 2026, I wanted a flat 2% card, and Wells Fargo was the first one that came to mind, since they had already invited me. My credit history was now over 3.5 years old, and my FICO Score was 766.

I applied for the second time in March 2026, and was approved quickly.

I’ve banked with Wells Fargo since 2021, but I already had that account when I was denied in 2024. What changed was the age of my credit history. That’s what got me approved.
How I Earned the $200 Bonus
To get the bonus, I needed to spend $500 in the first 3 months. That was easy, because I had things to buy in April anyway. The bonus posted on April 6, 2026.

On May 5, 2026, I redeemed $216.26 to my Wells Fargo checking account. That’s the $200 bonus plus $16.26 in 2% cash back, which means I’d spent about $813 on the card by then.

My invite offered a $200 bonus, but the current public offer is only $100.

The 2% Cash Back in Action
Every purchase earns 2%, no matter where. Here are a few of mine:

- $10.65 earned $0.21
- $118.54 earned $2.37
- $97.00 earned $1.94
How I Use It With My Other Cards
I use the Active Cash on Amazon and anywhere that doesn’t accept PayPal checkout. Wherever PayPal checkout works, I use my PayPal Cashback World Mastercard instead, because it pays 3% there.
| Where I spend | Card I use | Cash back |
|---|---|---|
| Anywhere with PayPal checkout | PayPal Cashback World Mastercard | 3% |
| Amazon.com, and anywhere without PayPal checkout | Wells Fargo Active Cash or my PayPal 2% card | 2% |
| Gas | PayPal Debit Card | 5% |
| Backup only | Discover it | 1% |
I also have a PayPal credit card that pays a flat 2%, so I just use whichever one. I keep both because together they give me a bigger total credit limit, which helps if I ever need to spend more.
I think it’s smart to open your cards early, but space them out. Each new card adds a hard inquiry and lowers your average account age right away, but both effects fade over time. When you’re young, your history is short anyway, so the hit is small, and those cards get more years to age. That’s what I did: Discover in 2022, PayPal in 2025 and Wells Fargo in 2026.
The 0% Intro APR: Useful for Paying Off Debt
The Active Cash has a 0% intro APR for 12 months from account opening, on purchases and qualifying balance transfers.
So if you’re paying high interest on another card, you could transfer that balance to the Active Cash and pay no interest on it for a year. A balance transfer fee applies, so check the current terms first. After the intro period, the regular variable APR applies, which right now is 18.74%, 24.74% or 28.74%, depending on your credit.
Downsides
It’s strict. Wells Fargo denied me with a good score because my credit history was too short. Build your history first, with a starter card like my Discover.
It’s a standard 2% card. It’s solid, but it has no hidden feature like the PayPal Cashback World Mastercard’s 3% on PayPal checkout.
Foreign transaction fees. There’s a 3% fee on purchases made in foreign currencies, so it’s not the card to use when traveling abroad.

My Verdict: Is the Wells Fargo Active Cash Worth It?
Yes. It’s a simple, no-annual-fee card that pays 2% cash back on everything, and it earned me $216.26 within weeks, thanks to the $200 bonus. It’s my go-to for Amazon and anywhere PayPal isn’t accepted.
Just don’t apply too early. If your credit history is under two or three years old, build it first. When Wells Fargo invites you, that’s a good sign they’re ready to approve you.
