Most people see the PayPal Cashback World Mastercard as a 1.5% card and move on. But anywhere you can check out with PayPal, it pays 3% cash back, which beats the popular flat 2% cash back cards. I’ve used it since May 2025, and it’s earned me $192.18 so far.

Here’s how the 3% works, where I use it, and how it fits with my other cards.

How the PayPal Cashback World Mastercard Works
The card has two cash back rates:
- 3% when you check out with PayPal online, or with PayPal QR codes in stores where you’re eligible
- 1.5% on everything else, online or in store

The trick is simple: use it wherever you see the PayPal button at checkout. That’s where it beats almost every other cash back card.
The card is issued by Synchrony Bank. You can read the full rewards terms from Synchrony.
Why 3% Beats a 2% Card
Many popular cash back cards pay a flat 2% on everything, and that’s usually considered a great rate. With PayPal checkout, this card pays 50% more.
On $500 of online shopping:
- A 2% card earns $10
- This card with PayPal checkout earns $15
The catch is the 1.5% on everything else, which is lower than a 2% card. So I don’t use it everywhere. I only use it where PayPal checkout is available.
Where I Get 3% Cash Back
PayPal checkout is accepted at a surprising number of places. I mostly use this card on eBay, GameStop, Nintendo, Steam and TCGplayer, and I’ve also used it on Etsy and a few other sites. Walmart.com, Best Buy, and Target accepts PayPal too.
Here are some of my real purchases, all at 3% cash back:

How to Get 3% on Every PayPal Checkout
There are two ways:
- Set the card as your default payment method in PayPal. Every PayPal checkout will use it automatically.
- Pick it at checkout. If it isn’t your default, you can select it from your list of payment methods when you pay with PayPal.
You can also earn 3% with PayPal QR codes in some stores.
How Much Cash Back I’ve Earned
In one statement, I earned $21.14 in cash back: $13.72 from 3% purchases and $7.42 from 1.5% purchases.

Since May 2025, I’ve earned $192.18 in total, with $59.34 of that so far this year. Most of it came from the 3%, because I switch to my 2% card wherever PayPal checkout isn’t available.

How I Use My Cash Back
About three days after each purchase, my cash back becomes available to transfer to my PayPal balance. There’s no minimum (you can transfer as little as one cent), and the rewards don’t expire. I transfer mine to my PayPal balance, then spend it on gas with my PayPal Debit Card, which gives me another 5% cash back on gas. On top of that, I use Upside for even more cash back at the pump.
So the cash back from this card ends up earning more cash back. Want to see how much you could save on gas? Try my gas cash back calculator.
How It Fits With My Other Cards
No single card is best for everything, so here’s how I split my spending:
| Where I spend | Card I use | Cash back |
|---|---|---|
| Anywhere with PayPal checkout | PayPal Cashback World Mastercard | 3% |
| Amazon.com, and anywhere without PayPal checkout | Wells Fargo Active Cash or my PayPal 2% credit card | 2% |
| Gas | PayPal Debit Card | 5% |
| Backup only | Discover it | 1% |
I keep my Discover card mainly for the length of my credit history, since it was my first card. It only pays 1%, which is even lower than the 1.5% cashback this card offers.
Getting Approved
Approval was easy for me. My credit score was in the mid-to-high 700s at the time, which I built with my first card, a Discover secured card. If you’re starting from zero, here’s how I got my first credit card with no credit history.

Downsides
Amazon doesn’t accept PayPal. I shop on Amazon a lot, and this is the biggest downside for me. For Amazon, I use my 2% card instead.
1.5% on everything else. Without PayPal checkout, this card earns less than a flat 2% card. That’s why I pair it with one.
My Verdict: Is the PayPal Cashback World Mastercard Worth It?
Yes, if you shop online at places that accept PayPal. For me, it’s a hidden gem: 3% cash back on eBay, Steam, Nintendo, GameStop and more, which beats the flat 2% cards that most people use. It’s earned me $192.18 since May 2025.
Use it only where you can check out with PayPal, and pair it with a 2% card for everything else, including Amazon. And always pay it off in full.
