Do You Have to Pay Taxes on CloudResearch Connect? (And Does It Send a 1099?)

Yes, Connect earnings are taxable, but whether you owe anything depends on how much you make and what other income you have. Connect’s terms say you’re an independent contractor, and that its payment processors send the tax forms, not CloudResearch.

I’ve made $176.72 on Connect from 213 approved studies, all cashed out to PayPal. On its own, that comes to $0 in tax. Here’s why, and when that changes.

Do You Have to Pay Taxes on CloudResearch Connect?

Yes, once you earn enough. Connect’s terms say you do studies “as an independent contractor,” and that your rewards “may constitute taxable income.” So your Connect pay is self-employment income, and nothing is taken out for taxes.

That can bring two taxes:

Here’s what that means:

  • Connect is your only income and your profit is under about $433: you owe nothing. My $176.72 falls here.
  • You also have a job: your Connect pay gets income tax, even on small amounts.
  • Your gig profit passes $433: you owe self-employment tax too.

The $433 line counts all your gig profit together. If you also do Prolific, add it in. Here’s how Prolific taxes work.

Does CloudResearch Connect Send a 1099?

Not from CloudResearch itself. Connect’s terms say its payment processors “will issue a 1099-K, as necessary.” You cash out through PayPal or a bank transfer, so any form would come from PayPal, or from Stripe for bank transfers.

You likely won’t get one. Payment processors only have to send a 1099-K when you get more than $20,000 in more than 200 payments in a year. A few states set the bar lower: over $600 in Maryland, Massachusetts, Vermont and Virginia, and over $1,000 in 4 or more payments in Illinois. PayPal cash-outs on Connect max out at $100 each, so you’d pass 200 payments well before $20,000 anyway.

No 1099 doesn’t mean no tax. The IRS says gig income has to be reported even if you don’t get a 1099-K, 1099-MISC or W-2.

CloudResearch Connect Taxes: How to Report Your Earnings

  1. Find your total. Download your Project History from Connect and upload it to my Connect earnings calculator. It adds up approved studies, bonuses and partial completes for you.
  2. Report it as self-employment income on Schedule C. Your profit is what’s left after expenses.
  3. Figure self-employment tax on Schedule SE if your net earnings are $400 or more. You get to deduct half of it.

I file with TaxAct. You add your self-employment income, and it fills in Schedule C and Schedule SE for you.

How Much Tax Will You Owe on CloudResearch Connect?

Here’s my own $176.72, as if it all came in one year. The Connect tax calculator shows:

  • No other income: $0. It’s under the $433 line and the standard deduction.
  • With a $40,000 W-2 job in California: about $24. That’s $17 federal income tax and $7 California tax, with no self-employment tax.

A bigger year looks different. $2,000 from Connect with a $40,000 W-2 job in California comes to about $532, since you pass the $433 line and owe self-employment tax too.

My Verdict: Do You Owe Taxes on CloudResearch Connect?

If Connect is your only income and you made under about $433, no. With a job, or once your gig profit passes $433, yes. CloudResearch won’t send you a 1099, and PayPal probably won’t either, so add up your earnings yourself and report them.

FAQ

Does CloudResearch Connect take out taxes?

No. You’re an independent contractor, so nothing is withheld.

Will PayPal send me a 1099-K for Connect?

Only if you get more than $20,000 in more than 200 payments in a year, or less in Maryland, Massachusetts, Vermont, Virginia and Illinois.

Do bonuses and partial completes count as income?

Yes. Bonuses and partial-complete payments are part of your Connect earnings, so include them in your total.

Do I need to make quarterly tax payments on Connect?

Only if you’ll owe $1,000 or more when you file. The IRS expects estimated tax payments then. With no other income, that takes about $7,100 of profit. With a job, you can raise your W-4 withholding instead.

Can I deduct expenses from my Connect income?

Yes, if they’re for your Connect work, like the work share of your internet. They lower your profit on Schedule C.

Do I pay state tax on Connect?

In most states, yes, once your total income is high enough. Nine states have no income tax on wages: Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington and Wyoming.
