Yes. Handshake AI pays you as an independent contractor, so no taxes are taken out, and once your profit is about $433, you owe self-employment tax. Handshake AI sends a 1099-NEC by January 31 if you earn enough, and you’ll find it on the Payments tab of your dashboard.
I made $3,905.81 on Handshake AI from January to March 2026, on a $17-an-hour project, paid weekly by direct deposit. That’s over the $2,000 line, so I’m expecting a 1099-NEC for 2026. Here’s how Handshake AI taxes work.

Do You Have to Pay Taxes on Handshake AI?
Yes, once you earn enough. Handshake AI’s help center says you get a 1099-NEC because you’re paid as an independent contractor, and that payments usually aren’t taxed upfront.
That brings two taxes:
- Self-employment tax: 15.3% (12.4% Social Security and 2.9% Medicare). You owe it when your net earnings from self-employment are $400 or more, which is about $433 of profit.
- Income tax: Only on income above your standard deduction: $16,100 if you’re single in 2026, $32,200 for married couples filing jointly and $24,150 for heads of household.
At $17 an hour, you pass $433 in about 26 hours of work.
- Handshake AI is your only income: a little over 14% of your profit goes to self-employment tax, plus income tax once you’re past the standard deduction.
- You also have a job: your Handshake AI pay gets income tax at your tax rate, on top of self-employment tax.
Does Handshake AI Send a 1099?
Yes, if you earn enough. Handshake AI’s help center says it issues Form 1099-NEC by January 31 of the following year to people who filled out a W-9. Your tax forms are on the Payments tab of your dashboard.
For 2026 payments, a company only has to send a 1099-NEC once it pays you $2,000 or more. Handshake’s help article still mentions $600, which was the rule through 2025.
Under $2,000, you may not get one. You still have to report the income.
Handshake AI Taxes: How to Report Your Earnings
- Add up your year. Your weekly payouts are on the Payments tab. Compare your total with your 1099-NEC when it arrives.
- Report it on Schedule C as self-employment income. Business expenses, like the work share of your internet, lower your profit.
- Figure self-employment tax on Schedule SE, and deduct half of it.
I file with TaxAct. You enter your 1099-NEC and any other self-employment income, and it fills in Schedule C and Schedule SE for you.
How Much Tax Will You Owe on Handshake AI?
Here’s my own $3,905.81. The Handshake AI tax calculator shows:
- No other income: about $552, all self-employment tax. Income tax would be $0, since $3,906 is under the standard deduction.
- With a $40,000 W-2 job in California: about $1,046. That’s $348 federal income tax, $552 self-employment tax and $145 California tax.
Do You Need to Make Quarterly Tax Payments on Handshake AI?
Maybe. The IRS expects estimated tax payments if you’ll owe $1,000 or more when you file. For 2026, they’re due April 15, June 15 and Sept. 15, 2026, and Jan. 15, 2027.
With no other income, self-employment tax alone reaches $1,000 at about $7,100 of profit, which is over 400 hours at $17 an hour. With a W-2 job, you get there sooner, but you can ask your employer to withhold more on a new W-4 instead.
My Verdict: Do You Owe Taxes on Handshake AI?
If you work more than a few days of projects, yes. Nothing is withheld, the $433 line comes quickly, and Handshake AI sends a 1099-NEC to the Payments tab once you earn $2,000 or more. Set aside part of every weekly payout and keep your own records.
