How your taxable income is worked out

    How this is calculated
    • Gig profit = UserCrowd + other gig income − gig expenses. UserCrowd pays you as an independent tester, so this is self-employment income, reported on Schedule C.
    • Self-employment tax is 15.3% (12.4% Social Security and 2.9% Medicare) on 92.35% of your gig profit. You only owe it when that comes to $400 or more, which means about $433 of profit. Social Security tax stops at $184,500 of combined W-2 pay and gig earnings. Half of it is deductible.
    • Federal income tax uses the 2026 brackets and standard deduction ($16,100 single, $32,200 married filing jointly, $24,150 head of household). It also includes the qualified business income deduction: 20% of your gig profit after the self-employment tax deduction, and at least $400 when that’s $1,000 or more.
    • Child tax credit is $2,200 per child under 17. Up to $1,700 per child can come back as a refund, based on 15% of your earned income over $2,500.
    • State income tax uses 2026 rates, brackets, standard deductions and exemptions from the Tax Foundation, updated for the 2026 cuts in Arkansas, Georgia, South Carolina, Utah and West Virginia. A few states (like California) hadn’t published 2026 bracket amounts, so their 2025 amounts are used. Head of household uses single brackets.
    • Tax on your UserCrowd earnings = your total tax minus what your total tax would be without UserCrowd. That’s the extra tax UserCrowd adds.
    • 1099-K: UserCrowd pays you from an Australian company (UsabilityHub PTY LTD, now Lyssna), so don’t expect a 1099 from it. Your payouts go to PayPal, which sends a Form 1099-K when you get more than $20,000 in more than 200 payments in a year (over $600 in Maryland, Massachusetts, Vermont and Virginia, and over $1,000 in 4 or more payments in Illinois). It counts all business payments to your PayPal, not just UserCrowd. Either way, you report all your UserCrowd income.
    • Before deductions leaves out the standard deduction, the qualified business income deduction, and state deductions and exemptions, so you can see how much they save you.

Not included: the earned income tax credit, city and county income taxes (like New York City or Maryland counties), state low-income credits, itemized deductions, and retirement or health insurance deductions. Your real tax can be lower.

How to Use the UserCrowd Tax Calculator

    1. Enter your UserCrowd earnings for the year. Count tests, screen-outs and interviews. UserCrowd has no download, so add up the amounts on your history page.
    2. Add your other income. Other gig income, gig expenses and W-2 pay. Enter 0 for anything you don’t have.
    3. Pick your filing status, children under 17 and state.
    4. Read your results. The big number is the extra tax UserCrowd adds to your bill, with the percentage to set aside under it. The notes tell you whether a 1099-K from PayPal is likely in your state.

    How the Calculator Works

It figures your total 2026 tax twice, once with your UserCrowd earnings and once without, and shows you the difference. That way, your other income, the standard deduction and your tax bracket are all accounted for.

    It includes:

    • Self-employment tax: 15.3% on 92.35% of your gig profit, once that’s $400 or more
    • Federal income tax with the 2026 brackets and standard deduction
    • The qualified business income deduction (20% of your gig profit)
    • The child tax credit
    • State income tax for all 50 states and DC

It leaves out the earned income tax credit, city and county taxes, itemized deductions and retirement deductions, so your real tax can be lower. Open “How this is calculated” under the calculator for the details.

    Example Results

    Single filer:

    SituationTax on UserCrowd
    $300, no other income$0
    $500, no other income$71
    $600 + a $40,000 W-2 job, California$161
    $1,000 + a $40,000 W-2 job, Texas$231
    $3,000, no other income$424

Plain tests rarely get past the first row. Interviews are what push you into the others. With a job, UserCrowd costs you about 24% to 27%. With no other income, it’s a little over 14%, all self-employment tax.

What to Do With Your Result

    • Set aside that percentage from each PayPal payout, especially if you do interviews.
    • Make quarterly payments if the calculator says you’ll owe $1,000 or more in federal tax on your gig income. With a job, you can raise your W-4 withholding instead.
    • Keep a record of your yearly total, since UserCrowd has no download.

Then read how to report UserCrowd income, and why there’s no 1099.

    UserCrowd Tax Calculator FAQ

Should I include screen-outs and interviews?

Yes. Everything UserCrowd pays you counts toward your total.

Why does it say I owe $0?

If UserCrowd is your only income and your profit is under about $433, you’re below the self-employment tax line and the standard deduction.

Why does it ask about other gig income?

The $400 self-employment tax line counts all your gig profit together, and other income changes your tax bracket.

    Does it include state tax?

Yes, for all 50 states and DC. Pick your state to add it.

    Is my information saved?

No. Everything runs in your browser. Nothing you type is saved or sent anywhere.
