How your taxable income is worked out

    How this is calculated
    • Gig profit = Connect + other gig income − gig expenses. Connect pays you as an independent contractor, so this is self-employment income, reported on Schedule C.
    • Self-employment tax is 15.3% (12.4% Social Security and 2.9% Medicare) on 92.35% of your gig profit. You only owe it when that comes to $400 or more, which means about $433 of profit. Social Security tax stops at $184,500 of combined W-2 pay and gig earnings. Half of it is deductible.
    • Federal income tax uses the 2026 brackets and standard deduction ($16,100 single, $32,200 married filing jointly, $24,150 head of household). It also includes the qualified business income deduction: 20% of your gig profit after the self-employment tax deduction, and at least $400 when that’s $1,000 or more.
    • Child tax credit is $2,200 per child under 17. Up to $1,700 per child can come back as a refund, based on 15% of your earned income over $2,500.
    • State income tax uses 2026 rates, brackets, standard deductions and exemptions from the Tax Foundation, updated for the 2026 cuts in Arkansas, Georgia, South Carolina, Utah and West Virginia. A few states (like California) hadn’t published 2026 bracket amounts, so their 2025 amounts are used. Head of household uses single brackets.
    • Tax on your Connect earnings = your total tax minus what your total tax would be without Connect. That’s the extra tax Connect adds.
    • 1099-K: Connect’s terms say its payment processors (PayPal, or Stripe for bank transfers) send a Form 1099-K as needed, so don’t expect a 1099-NEC from CloudResearch. They send one when you get more than $20,000 in more than 200 payments in a year (over $600 in Maryland, Massachusetts, Vermont and Virginia, and over $1,000 in 4 or more payments in Illinois). Either way, you report all your Connect income.
    • Before deductions leaves out the standard deduction, the qualified business income deduction, and state deductions and exemptions, so you can see how much they save you.

Not included: the earned income tax credit, city and county income taxes (like New York City or Maryland counties), state low-income credits, itemized deductions, and retirement or health insurance deductions. Your real tax can be lower.

How to Use the CloudResearch Connect Tax Calculator

    1. Enter your Connect earnings for the year. Include approved studies, bonuses and partial completes. The easiest way to get your total is to upload your Project History to my Connect earnings calculator.
    2. Add your other income. Enter other gig income, gig expenses and your W-2 pay. Enter 0 for anything you don’t have.
    3. Pick your filing status, children under 17 and state.
    4. Read your results. The big number is the extra tax Connect adds to your bill, with the percentage to set aside under it. The notes tell you whether a 1099-K is likely and whether you need to file.

    How the Calculator Works

It figures your total 2026 tax twice, once with your Connect earnings and once without, and shows you the difference. That way, your other income, the standard deduction and your tax bracket are all accounted for.

    It includes:

    • Self-employment tax: 15.3% on 92.35% of your gig profit, once that’s $400 or more
    • Federal income tax with the 2026 brackets and standard deduction
    • The qualified business income deduction (20% of your gig profit)
    • The child tax credit
    • State income tax for all 50 states and DC

It leaves out the earned income tax credit, city and county taxes, itemized deductions and retirement deductions, so your real tax can be lower. Open “How this is calculated” under the calculator for the details.

    Example Results

    Single filer:

    SituationTax on Connect
    $300 + a $40,000 W-2 job, Texas$29
    $500, no other income$71
    $1,000, no other income$141
    $1,500 + a $30,000 W-2 job, New York$407
    $2,000, no other income$283

Under about $433 of profit, Connect only adds income tax, and only if you have other income. In the Texas row, that’s about 10%. Past $433, self-employment tax takes a little over 14%, and with a job, income and state tax push it near 28%.

What to Do With Your Result

    • Set aside that percentage from each cash-out, so the money is there at tax time.
    • Make quarterly payments if the calculator says you’ll owe $1,000 or more in federal tax on your gig income. With a job, you can raise your W-4 withholding instead.
    • Keep your Project History export each year as your record.

Then read how to report Connect income, and why CloudResearch doesn’t send a 1099.
