How your taxable income is worked out

    How this is calculated
    • Prolific earnings = your dollars + your pounds × the exchange rate.
    • Gig profit = Prolific + other gig income − gig expenses. Prolific says participants are independent contractors, so this is self-employment income, reported on Schedule C.
    • Self-employment tax is 15.3% (12.4% Social Security and 2.9% Medicare) on 92.35% of your gig profit. You only owe it when that comes to $400 or more, which means about $433 of profit. Social Security tax stops at $184,500 of combined W-2 pay and gig earnings. Half of it is deductible.
    • Federal income tax uses the 2026 brackets and standard deduction ($16,100 single, $32,200 married filing jointly, $24,150 head of household). It also includes the qualified business income deduction: 20% of your gig profit after the self-employment tax deduction, and at least $400 when that’s $1,000 or more.
    • Child tax credit is $2,200 per child under 17. Up to $1,700 per child can come back as a refund, based on 15% of your earned income over $2,500.
    • State income tax uses 2026 rates, brackets, standard deductions and exemptions from the Tax Foundation, updated for the 2026 cuts in Arkansas, Georgia, South Carolina, Utah and West Virginia. A few states (like California) hadn’t published 2026 bracket amounts, so their 2025 amounts are used. Head of household uses single brackets.
    • Tax on your Prolific earnings = your total tax minus what your total tax would be without Prolific. That’s the extra tax Prolific adds.
    • 1099-K: Prolific doesn’t send 1099 forms. Your cash-outs to PayPal go on PayPal’s Form 1099-K, which PayPal sends when you get more than $20,000 in more than 200 payments in a year (over $600 in Maryland, Massachusetts, Vermont and Virginia, and over $1,000 in 4 or more payments in Illinois). It counts all business payments to your PayPal, not just Prolific. Either way, you report all your Prolific income.
    • Before deductions leaves out the standard deduction, the qualified business income deduction, and state deductions and exemptions, so you can see how much they save you.

Not included: the earned income tax credit, city and county income taxes (like New York City or Maryland counties), state low-income credits, itemized deductions, and retirement or health insurance deductions. Your real tax can be lower.

How to Use the Prolific Tax Calculator

    1. Enter your Prolific earnings in pounds and in dollars. Most studies pay in pounds and some pay in dollars. Both totals are on your Prolific Submissions page. Delayed bonuses don’t always show in the download, so check your cash-outs too.
    2. Set the exchange rate. It starts at £1 = $1.33. Use the rate from when you were paid, or the IRS yearly average when you file. In 2025, £1 was about $1.32.
    3. Add your other income. Other gig income, gig expenses and W-2 pay. Enter 0 for anything you don’t have.
    4. Pick your filing status, children under 17 and state.
    5. Read your results. The big number is the extra tax Prolific adds to your bill, with the percentage to set aside under it.

    How the Calculator Works

It figures your total 2026 tax twice, once with your Prolific earnings and once without, and shows you the difference. That way, your other income, the standard deduction and your tax bracket are all accounted for.

    It includes:

    • Self-employment tax: 15.3% on 92.35% of your gig profit, once that’s $400 or more
    • Federal income tax with the 2026 brackets and standard deduction
    • The qualified business income deduction (20% of your gig profit)
    • The child tax credit
    • State income tax for all 50 states and DC

It leaves out the earned income tax credit, city and county taxes, itemized deductions and retirement deductions, so your real tax can be lower. Open “How this is calculated” under the calculator for the details.

    Example Results

    Single filer, £1 = $1.33:

    SituationProlific earningsTax on Prolific
    £300, no other income$399$0
    £600 + $50, no other income$848$120
    £2,000, no other income$2,660$376
    £100 + a $40,000 W-2 job, California$133$18
    £1,000 + a $40,000 W-2 job, California$1,330$338

With no other income, you owe nothing until your profit passes about $433. After that, self-employment tax takes a little over 14%. With a job, even £100 gets taxed, because your W-2 pay already uses up the standard deduction.

What to Do With Your Result

    • Set aside that percentage from each Prolific cash-out, so the money is there at tax time.
    • Make quarterly payments if the calculator says you’ll owe $1,000 or more in federal tax on your gig income. With a job, you can raise your W-4 withholding instead.
    • Keep a record of your yearly total and the exchange rate you used.

Then read how to report Prolific income, and why Prolific doesn’t send a 1099.

    Prolific Tax Calculator FAQ

Why does it ask for pounds and dollars?

Most Prolific studies pay in pounds, and some pay in dollars. The calculator converts your pounds and adds both, since your taxes are figured in US dollars.

What exchange rate should I use?

The rate from when you were paid, or a posted rate you use the same way all year, like the IRS yearly average. In 2025, the IRS average put £1 at about $1.32.

Why does it say I owe $0?

If Prolific is your only income and your profit is under about $433, you’re below the self-employment tax line and the standard deduction.

    Does it include state tax?

Yes, for all 50 states and DC. Pick your state to add it.

    Is my information saved?

No. Everything runs in your browser. Nothing you type is saved or sent anywhere.

What tax year is it for?
